Reliable Overnight Care for Your Loved One—Comfort, Safety, and Dignity

Respite Care

Overnight care, also known as Waking Night care, is a care and support arrangement in which a care worker stays with a client overnight to attend to any needs the client may have during the night. The client may live on their own or as part of a household.

The typical hours for overnight care tend to be from 10pm to 7 am the following day, although this can be adjusted depending on the client’s particular support needs.

Our trained and supportive care workers have provided overnight care for private clients, as well for care schemes commissioned by London area local authorities and also for the NHS ICBs (formerly known as Continuing Care Groups, CCGs), both in the client’s home, as well as in residential and supported living environments.

Having access to trained staff through the night is essential for many complex medical conditions or when an individual is recuperating from an illness.

For some clients and family members in certain situations, Overnight care is indispensable, as it provides them the assurance and safety during quieter night hours when most are asleep, or when client lives on their own. Knowing that there is a trained, attentive care worker present to assist the client should the need arise or at particular scheduled intervals, relieves the anxiety that one can naturally feel in such situations. There are various care-related tasks that are usually performed during the night. These will be person-centred an agreed in consultation with client, family members where applicable or other health professionals.

However, typically tasks undertaken will include areas such as:

  • providing reassurance
  • medical conditions such as dementia, in which the early hours can be a time for wandering due to time or spatial disorientation

  • toileting assistance or continence management

  • providing a drink or small snack when required

  • helping client with moving and handling tasks, such as turning or changing position in bed

  • assistance with medication

  • assisting the client using more specialized equipment

  • monitoring client’s condition, mood etc. and making detailed documentation, enabling health professionals or family to make informed assessments regarding the client’s health and well-being

Overnight care is also sometimes necessary in situation where the client has had a recent hospital discharge following surgery or other procedure, and the presence of a care worker is necessary to be close to the client and to provide any assistance where required.
